What to look for when choosing a mattress
Did you know that new babies can sleep for up to 18 hours a day? Sleep is just wonderful for your baby, it helps their little bodies get stronger, helps their brains to develop and grow, and helps them fight off germs!
This is one of the most important items you will need to buy for your baby. Your baby’s mattress matters, they need good quality, safe sleep to develop and grow, so it is vital to choose the right mattress from day one.
Fits your Cot or Cot bed Snuggly: Your mattress needs to fit your cot or cot bed – it should be clean and comfy - but you don't want any gaps around the sides.
Firm supportive mattress: Your baby’s mattress should be firm to give them the right support. Babies should always be placed on their back to sleep and should not be able to ‘sink’ into a mattress as this can restrict their movement.
Breathability: Breathability is important too, a mattress which allows air to flow and draw moisture away from your baby, will help with reduced heat retention and help to ensure your baby’s temperature is well regulated.
Invest in a Mattress Protector: A reusable mattress protector is an investment, and well worth it. It protects your baby's mattress from accidents, spills and leaks and can help create a barrier for dust, mites and allergens. When you need to, they can be popped in the washing machine to be used again.
New V Second hand mattress: For health and safety health official generally advise to get a new, clean, dry mattress and not to use a second hand mattress for your baby, particularly if it is from outside your own home. If you decide to use your own mattress again, ensure it is still firm and flat with no tears or holes, and is not sagging in places. Thoroughly clean the waterproof layer and ensure the mattress is clean and dry before making it up with fresh bed clothes.
