Understanding TOG: Dressing Your Baby for Safe, Comfortable Sleep
We know that dressing your baby for the right temperature isn’t always straightforward. Many parents and carers tell us they feel unsure when it comes to choosing the right TOG—and that’s completely understandable 🤍
Every baby is different. What feels cosy for one may feel too warm or too cool for another. Room temperatures can change throughout the night, and the layers you choose all play a role in how warm your baby feels. Because of this, there’s no one-size-fits-all approach—but there are simple guidelines that can help.
Your Simple Guide to TOG
To make things easier, we’ve created a helpful TOG guide to support you in choosing the right sleepwear for your baby.
Whether you’re wondering “what is TOG?” or trying to decide which TOG is best for your room temperature, this guide is designed to give you clarity and confidence at bedtime.
What Does TOG Mean?
TOG stands for Thermal Overall Grade—a measure of how warm a fabric is.
Put simply:
- Lower TOG = lighter, cooler fabric
- Higher TOG = warmer, more insulated fabric
Choosing the Right TOG
As a general guide, you can match your baby’s sleepwear TOG to the room temperature:
🌿 0.2 TOG – Best for warm rooms (24–27°C)
🌿 1.0 TOG – Ideal for mild temperatures (20–24°C)
🌿 1.5 TOG – Great for in-between seasons (18–22°C)
🌿 2.5 TOG – Suitable for cooler rooms (16–20°C)
🌿 3.5 TOG – Designed for colder environments (below 16°C)
In warmer weather, lighter TOGs like 0.2 are perfect. As temperatures drop, you can move to higher TOGs like 2.5 or 3.5 to keep your baby comfortable through the night.
Gentle Reminder
Always dress your baby based on the room temperature, not the season, and check their chest or back to ensure they’re comfortably warm—not too hot, not too cold.
